Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996:

Section 255 requires that the manufacturers of all telecommunications equipment and software ensure that all products are designed to be accessible to those with disabilities, if this goal is "readily achievable". If this can not be accomplished, Section 255 requires that all products at least be "compatible with existing peripheral devices or specialized customer premise equipment commonly used by individuals with disabilities to achieve access."
